I think I'm going to tell my Rheumy that I at least want to try Plaquenil and take the risk (I only got a really red rash that looked like measles when I had the reaction).thanks, Robin I have a sulfa allergy, and have taken Plaquenil for 4 years without any adverse effects.

    Sep 02, 2009 I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions. Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye.
